North Carolina. September 13. Greensboro residents Steve Tanis and Rich Garraputa, who have been together for 13 years, walk toward the North Carolina Legislative Building Tuesday after a rally against a state constitutional amendment that would label marriage between a man and a woman as the only domestic legal union in North Carolina.
The State Senate voted Tuesday to put the gay marriage ban on the ballot in May 2012. The House voted in favor of the measure Monday.
If approved, the state constitution would be amended to only recognize marriage between a man and a woman as a legal union. Domestic partnerships and civil unions between straight couples and gay couples would not be recognized by the state.
