Challenge capsules for students who finish early. After finishing their daily work the students can pick one of the capsules and then complete the task inside. I think it would be a cool idea to color code activities by the lids. That way the students knew that if they picked a capsule with a yellow lid they would be doing a writing activity, a blue lid for vocabulary, a red lid for reading, and so on.

I want to find a way to include this idea in a high school English class. It would be awesome and so much better than kids sitting around listening to their iPods or talking to their friends.

My students see things like this as punishment. Like, “I finished! Why are you making me work more?!”. And then I want to say “that’s life” but then that’s too existential and then we bicker…

I tend to agree with GWALP, things like this are not seen as rewards but punishments…they’re seen by teachers as creative solutions.

I’ve never understood why students who are quick to grasp a concept or quick to complete a task are “rewarded” by being given more work…i know there will always be some who rush through whatever is assigned to just get it done but you’ll have those regardless.

If the reward for being the smart or hard-working one  is more work, unless they truly enjoy doing more work, it’s not much of an incentive to work to be that individual…
