Twenty years ago today (well, okay, technically yesterday, but whatever), I was six years old. It was night, and I was quietly slumbering in my bed. I still shared a room with my sister, who is 3 years older. My mom was pregnant with my little sis.

Suddenly, our sleep was disturbed. Our parents pulled us out of bed, carried us downstairs and put us down in front of the TV. I had no idea what was going on. I asked my mom why we were watching TV.
“This is a historical moment. You see those people? Some of those people haven’t seen their mommies for a very long time. That big wall was keeping them away. But now, they’re tearing it down. They can see their mommies again.”

“But why didn’t they go to their mommies when they wanted to?”

“If they tried, bad people came and put them in jail.”

I think this is when I fell asleep again. But I’m still grateful to my parents for dragging us out of bed so we could witness history.

That’s what I remember, too, H, as does Sparklepants (per her answer to my question the other day). Only it was morning here. I was in my parents bedroom, with that horrible old wallpaper, and the tv that sat in the shelf where the closet is, now. And my Dad was getting dressed for work. There’s no forgetting.

I vaguely remember watching coverage of this in my living room at our old house with my mom. I remember being impressed by the amount of graffiti.

Ultimately, the right of affluent women to obtain an abortion hasn’t been much affected - except in the case of late-term procedures. But affluent women always had options even when abortion was illegal in every state. They could fly to Puerto Rico or Japan and get a safe abortion there without having to risk potentially lethal chemicals or abortions at the hands of unlicensed doctors or other providers operating on somebody’s kitchen table in less than sterile conditions.

Thanks to Hyde, low-income women in most states are still at a disadvantage when it comes to getting an abortion. Stupak-Pitts, if it survives the conference process, will not only reinforce this classist attack on women, it will also broaden it.

Being ferociously opposed to it is, therefore, not irrational or hypersensitive or over-reactive. It’s called standing up for progressive values.

[snip]

For those who might suggest this is one of those damned “social issues” that gets the Democrats in trouble on election day, let’s not forget that it’s at its core a class war, as Stupak-Pitts makes quite clear. Affluent women will always find a way to find a safe and legal abortion. Insurance or no insurance.

Stupak-Pitts may only be another nibble, but it is the cumulative effect that matters. Eventually, lots of little nibbles equal the entire pie. Those who say our vigorous, uncompromising opposition to it is an irrational overreaction ought to be ashamed of themselves.
”

-
Daily Kos: What’s Really Pissing Me Off

Class warfare at its finest. Oh wait, lots of well-meaning liberals don’t give a fuck about that any more than they do about abortion rights.

…is the fact that they’re always crying, “But that’s not fair!” I have to pay more taxes. I have to pay for that guy’s social services. I have to pay more health insurance—even though I’m not sick—because other people are sick! If I’m equally qualified for a job/scholarship/some other social reward as a “minority”, the law requires the person giving the reward to give the reward to the “minority”—and even though no one ever follows that law, and I’m probably going to get the reward anyhow, that’s just so unfair and wrong! Oh, poor pitiful me for being white and/or male and/or well-educated and/or in a privileged economic class!

But the first time one of the rest of us goes, “But that’s not fair,” when we are talking about women or people of color or people of a less privileged economic class, you better BELIEVE you are going to get called out on it.

The “free market”—which is essentially just an economic system in which the wealthy, powerful, and educated get to do whatever the fuck they want, and the rest, being lesser beings, don’t matter so who the fuck cares what they do—is the great equalizer! (Even though we know it’s not.) It will magically disappear all the inequities of our society! (Even though we know it won’t.) And whatever inequities it doesn’t get rid of, well, you can just suck it, because LIFE’S NOT FAIR, BITCH.

(Unless, of course, you are a person of privilege. In which case, life must always be extra fair to you.)

In a day and age when star coaches at schools in the country’s richest recruiting grounds have been hoarding the top talent, the Hawkeyes were an unlikely candidate to threaten them. The team has never won an outright national title, it’s only had one marquee recruiting class in the past five years and was ranked No. 22 before this season. Even its coach, Kirk Ferentz, said he was surprised by its performance. “Realistically, I have a hard time even picturing us in the top 10,” he said last month.

Yet the Hawkeyes started 9-0 this season and beat so many solid opponents that they were ranked No. 1 at one point by the computer polls. Even the loss to Northwestern wasn’t an indictment—the Hawkeyes had opened up a lead in the game that collapsed only after junior quarterback Ricky Stanzi was forced out with an ankle injury.

What’s remarkable about the Iowa program is its relative isolation. The ride to campus in Iowa City cuts through endless farmland. “I mean, a lot of corn on the drive up,” says Iowa tight end Tony Moeaki. The lack of population puts the team in a peculiar fix. Other top football schools fill their rosters with scholarship players from their home states—roughly 59% of Florida’s recruits the past five years were from Florida, and a whopping 93% of Texas’s were from the state, according to Rivals.com. The Hawkeyes have taken only 22% of their recruits over this period from Iowa, which is one of the smaller states to have a major-conference football program.

There are four other teams ranked in the top 20 of this week’s BCS standings that have lower percentages of native players. Boise State took just 16% of its recruits from Idaho in the past five years, and Oklahoma State took 16% from Oklahoma, while Arizona and Oregon have even lower figures. But each of those schools has an advantage Iowa doesn’t: They feed off of bountiful talent from a giant football state nearby—Texas in Oklahoma State’s case, and California for the other three.

While Iowa is roughly four hours from several Midwestern cities, it faces stiff challenges from competitors like Notre Dame, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio State. As a result, Iowa’s recruiting rankings aren’t usually the stuff of champions.
