So my aunt was helping my 87-year-old devout Roman Catholic grandmother fill out her ballot the other day. She asked her to approve or reject R-74. Apparently my grandma said, “Oh, yes. They’re all sleeping together anyway. They might as well get married.”

Yay Grandma.

Reblogging mostly for the Dowager.

The 1912 presidential election was a three-way contest among former President Theodore Roosevelt for the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party, New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson for the Democratic Party, and incumbent President William Howard Taft for the Republican Party. As the election neared, Taft, who had given no major campaign speeches in the months leading up to the election, was living up to the moniker that Roosevelt had given him in September - “a dead cock in the pit.” Despite his lackluster campaign performance, Taft’s campaign managers continued to argue that he was still a contender in the race. They even announced a prediction for the election outcome: Taft would win with 280 electoral votes. In this cartoon, published just weeks before Election Day in the Washington Evening Star, the Democratic donkey and the Bull Moose are shown laughing hysterically. In the general election, held on November 5, 1912, Taft gained a mere eight electoral votes compared with Roosevelt, who gained 88 and Wilson—the winner—who gained 435.

I worked extremely hard… I take credit for the work. But I received a free education. I received free health care… I’m unapologetic about saying this,” she added. “I had pneumonia when my daughter was under one year old. If we hadn’t had free health care in this country, God only knows what would have happened to either of us. I am proud of having done what I’ve done. Very proud. But. I do take issue – and this does go to the heart of this book, which is why I have to say it—with anyone who truly feels it’s a 100 percent down to them.

Bernie Sanders - A Class War That We Must Win” .. in America today we have the most unequal distribution of income and wealth of any major country on earth and .. the gap between the very rich and everyone else is growing wider. Today, the top 1 percent earns more income than the bottom 50 percent of Americans. In 2010, 93 percent of all new income went to just the top 1 percent. In terms of wealth, the top 1 percent owns 42 percent of the wealth in America while the bottom 60 percent owns just 2.3 percent. In my view, we will not make progress in addressing either the jobs or deficit crisis unless we are prepared to take on the greed of Wall Street and big-money interests who want more and more for themselves at the expense of all Americans. Let’s be clear. Class warfare is being waged in this country. It is being waged by the Koch brothers, Sheldon Adeslon, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and all the others who want to decimate working families in order to make the wealthiest people even wealthier. In this class war that we didn’t start, let’s make sure it is the middle class and working families who win, not the millionaires and billionaires.”From this article by the excellent Bernie Sanders, who is that rarest of creatures in the USA today .. an honest politician who actually represents the interests of the voters.

Bernie Sanders is my patronus.

NO I DO NOT NEED TO EAT, MOM. I NEED YOU TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOUR HETERONORMATIVE IDEALS AND DRACONIAN ADHERENCE TO TRADITIONAL GENDER BINARIES CLOUD YOUR ABILITY TO ACCEPT THE WORLD AS IT SHOULD BE AND PREVENT YOU FROM MAKING CHANGES THAT MIGHT FREE US FROM THE DESTRUCTIVE AND THREATENING OPPRESSION OF A PRIVILEGED RULING MALE CLASS. I NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND GENDER INEQUALITY AND THE STRUGGLE OF THE LGBT COMMUNITY AGAINST THE PREVAILING HEGEMONY SO THAT FUTURE GENERATIONS CAN TRULY EXPERIENCE EQUALITY AND FREEDOM OF CHOICE, SOCIAL MOBILITY AND A SENSE OF PEACE, NOT SUBJECT THEMSELVES TO INFERIOR ROLES WITHIN A FLAWED AND OVERREACHING SYSTEM OF DOMINANCE AND FEAR.
I SPENT ALL DAY OVER A HOT STOVE TO PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE. EAT SOMETHING.
OH MY GOD! DO YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN?
