Our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. Our journey is not complete until no citizen is forced to wait for hours to exercise the right to vote. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity!

Between the years 2000-2010 (from reputable sources):

47,000        number of reported UFO sightings.

441            number of Americans killed by lightning

13              number of documented in-person voter impersonations.

The recent spate of Republican voter suppression laws put on the books across the country is the most serious attempt to restrict American democracy since southern Democrats used poll taxes and literacy tests.  What the GOP is doing today is just the updated version of an old tale.

A GOP-appointed federal judge in DC recently struck down Alabama’s voter restriction law. Other judges will hear other cases as (hopefully) the Obama Justice Department brings lawsuits, though Republicans and their media allies will cry “politics!” at every one.

Judges, the majority of whom have been appointed by Republican presidents over the years, will have to step up and defend a democracy’s most sacred birthright.  Some will and some will not; the hope is the system as a whole will do the right thing.  While jingoists regularly praise the longevity and stability of our democracy, the truth it… it is fragile.  Always has been and always will be.

Actually, this isn’t a quiz at all. There is no deeply-embedded, powerful lobbying group working to ensure that our constitutional right to vote is protected, whether one is convicted of a felony or not. This is why it is fairly easy to play “stop the vote/voter” games in every election cycle.

If Charles and David Koch have their way, millions of eligible Americans won’t be able to cast a vote in 2012.

In recent years, the billionaire political operatives have used their vast fortunes to finance the drafting, promoting and introduction of model bills restricting people’s ability to vote, and so far legislatures in 38 states have introduced Koch Brothers-supported legislation. All told, this is the most aggressive and widespread attack on the right to vote since the voting rights restrictions that paved the way for segregation.

This week, Brave New Films debuts a new video shining the spotlight on the Koch Brothers and their role in the voting rights attacks. “Koch Brothers Exposed” is a call to action for all Americans concerned about protecting this most fundamental of rights.

The Republican assault on voting in Florida has been relentless, so much so that one law-maker suggested that the state screen all “Hispanic-speaking people” for citizenship prior to voting.

Sen. Alan Hays, (R-Umatilla) made the comments to the Senate committee reviewing a series of congressional redistricting plans. One plan would create a Hispanic-majority district to reflect the state’s surging Puerto Rican population. In response Hays said “before we design a district anywhere in the state of Florida for Hispanic voters, we need to ascertain that they are citizens of the United States. We all know there are many Hispanic-speaking people in Florida that are not legal, and I just don’t think it’s right that we try to draw a district that encompasses people that really have no business voting anyhow.

The GOP War On Voting Is In Full Swing

“Registering [the poor] to vote is like handing out burglary tools to criminals.  It is profoundly antisocial and un-American to empower the nonproductive segments of the population to destroy the country — which is precisely why Barack Obama zealously supports registering welfare recipients to vote. […] Encouraging those who burden society to participate in elections isn’t about helping the poor.  It’s about helping the poor to help themselves to others’ money.” -Conservative columnist Matthew Vadum

John Stossel (Fox News): “Let’s stop saying everyone should vote.”
Rush Limbaugh: “If people cannot even feed and clothe themselves, should they be allowed to vote?”
Judson Phillips (Tea Party Nation): “If you’re not a property owner, I’m sorry, but property owners have a little bit more of a vested stake in the community than not property owners do.”
